Location Location Location follows Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant as they return to key filming locations for Season 22 (with one notable exception) it’s a lot of fun, with some lovely moments, and a nice showcase of the scope of this season. There are also optional updated effects for Revelation of the Daleks, taken from the 2005 DVD release, which could have probably done with some minor improvements for this Blu-ray. Timelash also now has optional replacement CGI effects, which look good but don’t exactly improve the story (a number of effects shots have also been left unaltered, perhaps for the worse). There are also extended edits of both parts of Vengeance, Part One of The Two Doctors and Part One of Revelation, although Vengeance’s new material is obvious as the quality dips considerably no 5.1 sound mixes are available to for any of the extended edits either, which is particularly annoying considering that this wasn’t the case with earlier collection sets. Attack of the Cybermen, Vengeance on Varos and Revelation of the Daleks all feature 5.1 surround sound mixes, which really do enhance the viewing experience. ![]() The episodes themselves have no doubt been presented in as high quality as possible, but the picture does vary quite a bit and isn’t a huge upgrade over the DVDs (the film sequences in Mark of the Rani look particularly soft for a Blu-ray release). This new Blu-ray Collection set from BBC Studios presents all thirteen, forty-five-minute episodes with new remasters alongside a whole TARDIS-worth of special features. Even if Doctor Who’s future was uncertain at the end of Season 22, Revelation makes a good case for its longevity. Ending the season on a high note is Revelation of the Daleks, an atmospheric black comedy that may not make a huge amount of sense, but does feature some memorable dialogue, creepy music, and excellent direction from Graeme Harper. The scripts are baffling, the performances even more so ( Paul Darrow as Laurence Olivier as Richard III as baddie Tekker is the sort of over-the-top acting one has to see to believe), the pacing is poor, and the production values are awful. Timelash is often cited as one of the worst Doctor Who stories ever (ironically broadcast after the show was cancelled), and I can’t exactly argue against that. Perhaps the greatest disappointment of this three-part story is that Colin Baker and Patrick Troughton barely share any screen-time together, although Jamie does become a temporary second companion for the Sixth Doctor (and one who surprisingly compliments the TARDIS dynamic very well). It’s always nice to see Patrick Troughton and Frazer Hines return as the Second Doctor and Jamie, not to mention the welcome return of the Sontarans, but Robert Holmes’ scripts are unnecessarily padded and lacking in stakes. Speaking of location filming, The Two Doctors takes the TARDIS to Seville, Spain for a rather curious multi-Doctor adventure. Mark of the Rani introduces Kate O’Mara’s malevolent Time Lady – a character I’ve never felt has been particularly well-realised on television – but is otherwise a fairly lacklustre historical story complimented by some nice location filming. The following story, Vengeance on Varos, represents the best of this era of the show: a satire of reality television, not to mention a commentary on contemporary ‘video nasties’, Philip Martin’s two-part tale puts its main characters through the ringer, resulting in a very dark and violent adventure that remains relevant decades later. The season opens with Attack of the Cybermen: a serial bogged down in various continuity references and fan service that don’t exactly aid the plot, yet still manages to be entertaining easily the worst aspect is the awful incidental music. She does have terrific on-screen chemistry with Baker, and I do find them both a very endearing TARDIS team, albeit one better served in Big Finish’s audio dramas. Alas, the scripts don’t often give Bryant much to do beyond the archetypal companion tropes – including standing still and screaming at silly monsters, rather than simply running away, or fighting back. ![]() And besides, who else could pull-off that ridiculous outfit? Joining him is Nicola Bryant as Peri, who had been introduced mid-way through the previous season and is here given the task transitioning in the new Doctor, both for him and for the audience. Even then, the Sixth Doctor never loses sight of his morals, and is always ready to face-off against evil when it threatens. Even if the writing can sometimes make ‘Old Sixie’ seem a little too pompous and mean, it’s refreshing to see such a flawed incarnation of the Doctor. Colin Baker is a brilliant Doctor, throwing himself into the role with a tremendous amount of energy and enthusiasm, elevating the material given. ![]() ![]() When the whole team decided to secretly inject him with truth serum without telling him one day, he took a deep breath and powered through it after sharing many a detail of his first time that was quickly dragged out of him. There were some things in life that were out of his control, and while he hadn’t yet found a healthy way to cope with that information, he had turned to denial instead to try to block out the anxious storm brewing inside of him. It was a common occurrence in his life and as such, he had forced himself to become accustomed to it. Summary: Brett and Reagan experiment with their first real session. There is one more column that is the same but this was removed by the filtering, the name was too generic. I might send in a Feature Request for this. This would mean if the listening_ports columns are renamed with the local_ prefix (as listening is local), it will make it more alike. In process_open_sockets the port and address have a prefix, local_ and remote_. Interesting to see if you analyze the graph below you see almost all columns are the same but port and address(not visible), I went back to the table schema and noticed a difference in naming. Like listening_ports and process_open_sockets tables, they are both based on similar data so it would be logical that the column names would be pretty much the same. It is also good to be able to check if the graph gives results that you would expect. This would mean if a table has one of these columns it will give the most possibility for extra enrichment based on other tables. Zooming in on the graph you notice that uid and pid are the most connected column names. To understand the code snippets in the Jupyter Notebook you might need some basic understanding of: I was working on this as a personal project but when I heard about Jupyterthon I thought it was a good opportunity to present my research and also write this blog. Here is where my “Osquery❓ tables ➕ Jupyter Notebook?” journey started. Visualization of the connection between tables can help to understand the possibilities and how the tables can be extended. How can I visualize the relationship, for possible JOINs, between the tables? There is a great amount of information that you can retrieve from different Osquery tables, so in order to find related context for my Threat Hunts, I had to manually search through the table structures and sometime with trial and error find the data I needed. At the moment of writing Osquery is at version 4.3.0 and there are 257 tables! ? Not all tables can be used on all Operating Systems, at this moment it is divided as follows: Every component of the system that you can query is a different table, as you can understand there are quite some tables. ![]() Osquery is a great tool, as you can query almost everything on a system real-time, all is built around the simple concept of making difficult system calls easy to question (query) in SQL-like syntax. Query SELECT name, path, cmdline FROM processes WHERE cmdline LIKE '%jupyter%' Output name = python.exe path = C:\Users\username\Anaconda3\python.exe cmdline = C:\Users\username\Anaconda3\python.exe C:\Users\username\Anaconda3\Scripts\jupyter-notebook-script.py C:\Users\username/ This gives the possibility to “question” a system with simple SQL-like query syntax: Find Jupyter Notebook processes running at this moment. Osquery exposes an operating system as a high-performance relational database. I really like the current Open Source Security community and one special project for me is Osquery. One of the latest Jupyter Notebook projects I have been working on is the subject of this blog. For example: CTFs, API calls, Machine Learning and Threat Hunts. So I had to take quite some extra time learning Python and how it is applied in Jupyter Notebooks, I am still learning new things everyday… ?īut the best way to learn something new is to dive right in, so since I discovered Jupyter Notebooks I have been using it in pretty much anything I need to put some programmatic logic in. Let’s say programming/development is not my forte. I come from a System and Network Engineering background before rolling into Information Security. Uses include: data cleaning and transformation, numerical simulation, statistical modeling, data visualization, machine learning, and much more.Īs time went by I started to understand the genius of it and how you might be able to apply it in Information Security and Threat Hunting. The Jupyter Notebook is an open-source web application that allows you to create and share documents that contain live code, equations, visualizations and narrative text. ![]() ![]()

Leia has sent her most daring pilot on a secret mission to Jakku, where an old ally has discovered a clue to Luke’s whereabouts… She is desperate to find her brother Luke and gain his help in restoring peace and justice to the galaxy. With the support of the REPUBLIC, General Leia Organa leads a brave RESISTANCE. In his absence, the sinister FIRST ORDER has risen from the ashes of the Empire and will not rest until Skywalker, the last Jedi, has been destroyed. That, for example, is the flag of the Golden Dawn. You see something like this with modern-day far-right groups: they cannot show Hitler's swastika, and instead substitute similar, but distinct symbols, like the Celtic cross, Norse runes, or a swastika-like Greek meander. It was similar enough to the Empire's emblem to attract its old supporters, but was technically not the Empire's emblem, and Snoke could always deny the similarity as coincidental. Thus, as a compromise, they created that fanged mouth symbol. It could not claim to be the Empire's legal successor, or use any of its (banned) iconography, but it also needed to show that they followed Palpatine's vision, at least in spirit. The First Order wanted to be recognised as a legitimate political entity, and at least de jure adhered to the Galactic Concordance before Force Awakens. It is sensible to assume that after Palpatine's defeat, the newly formed New Republic banned all symbols of the old regime so the galaxy could overcome its dark past - similarly to how Nazi symbols are banned in many European countries. This is just speculation on my part, but I believe the reason the First Order wants to create an obvious, yet deniable, connection to the Empire. Star Wars - Journey to the Force Awakens: Aftermath. On their torsos sit carbon-lace armor, the shoulders marked with the sigil of the New Republic: the Alliance starbird, now inside a sunburst. On a side note, the Resistance adopted the symbol of the Alliance to Restore the Old Republic, but so did the New Republic: Again, this is a very good reason for the Order to distance itself from the embarrassing historical record of the Empire, to whatever degree was possible.įinally, the Imperial Crest brought up a lot of very bad memories for much of the galaxy - this also may have played a role convincing the First Order to consider a change of aesthetics. ![]() The Empire, on the other hand, had been crushed by a ragtag group of insurgents and a handful of primitive teddy bears. ![]() Since the New Republic was the clear heir to the Republican throne, and the First Order despised the Republic and everything associated with it, it would make sense for them to distance themselves from the Imperial logo and its Republic origins.įurthermore, the Rebel Alliance was victorious, and their achievements were something to be proud of. ![]() Was modeled on the logo of the Old Republic, known as the Galactic Roundel:Ĭombined with the symbol of the old Republic's Navy: Possibly because the Imperial Crest itself If there's no canon info, I'll welcome some speculation. Give how much the First order mirrors the Empire, why didn't they use the Imperial Symbol? Why did the Resistance use the Rebel symbol while the First Order didn't use the Empire's? The First Order is intentionally emulating the Empire, both in mission and look. The Resistance's similarity to the Rebel Alliance is more coincidental that's just how it played out. Yes, the Resistance is made up of a lot of former Rebel Alliance supporters, but the Resistance was only created in order to stop the First Order. This is really strange to me as the First Order openly seeks to emulate the Empire in its mission to dominate the Galaxy. Many pilots, including Poe Dameron, wore helmets featuring the logo. Nearly thirty years after the Battle of Endor, the Resistance adopted the same emblem. The flight helmets of the Rebel X-wing pilots were adorned with the starbird logo. The Rebel Alliance starbird was a symbol of the Alliance to Restore the Republic. ![]() ![]() And another solution could be to offer front-end engineers an Abstract Syntax language for front-end development that could be compiled into the syntax of the JavaScript frontend they chose as output.Īll of these could be added to the work that I am doing with this next-generation compiler (also here). Language wrappers that convert C code to Java have already been developed successfully in the past. This would not be hard for a software engineer or a team that masters how compilers are built because all of this is about dealing with grammatical syntax and reserved words. This solution is a wrapper that could take as input the code of a given front-end solution developed with a given JavaScript front-end framework and convert it into the other JavaScript front-end framework syntax and implementation. This second solution highlights a tech-enabled solution that could be useful to low-budget startups and development teams that could not afford many front-end engineers or/and are constrained by time. Or if you’re someone who can master many JavaScript front-end frameworks by yourself, then you need more time to develop the front-end with each framework. But as I have highlighted in this last sentence, this second solution requires many skilled front-end engineers, at least one for each front-end framework. Then you can use the data you have gathered for deciding on what front-end framework your final front-end solution will be based on. The second solution for those who have time and/or human resources is to build your front-end with every popular JS frontend and to do the benchmarking yourself in production. But with such a solution, building trust could be an issue because who knows if I am paid or not by the team behind a JavaScript front-end framework. These benchmarking (benchmarketing is a great name by the way) reports are done by people like me who are independent professionals. One solution could be to gather benchmarking data about each framework and make a choice given that data was gathered. But how do we decide what front-end to choose? ![]() Since jQuery, many frameworks have been created and now front-end engineers can choose from React, Vue.js, Ember.js, AngularJS, Svelte, Inferno, and others for building interactive and creative front-ends that expose the logic and result of their web applications to end-users.Īs I have highlighted in my last article ( here) about JavaScript frameworks and core web vitals metric, the choice of JavaScript front-end framework does not depend on the front-end engineer’s skills and will but on the values that are delivered to the end-users - and the time the application takes to show content to the user is becoming on of the most important values. JavaScript front-end frameworks are now very popular and useful to all the community of JavaScript developers.
